| Engineering and construction executive, born in Aurora, Indiana, USA. He joined his father's western construction company, W A Bechtel Corp (1919), eventually becoming president (1936–60). Among his projects was the Hoover Dam (1931). His other engineering design and construction companies, consolidated as Bechtel Corp (1946), became the largest such corporation in the world, building many power plants, pipelines, oil refineries, and factories worldwide. His son, Stephen Davison Bechtel, Jr (1925– ), spent his career at Bechtel Corp (president from 1960), overseeing projects including the trans-Alaska pipeline and the subway system in Washington, DC. On his retirement (1990), he was succeeded as president by his son, Riley P Bechtel, who became chairman of the company in 1996. |
