| Symbolist poet, born in Paris, France. He taught English in Paris and elsewhere, visiting England on several occasions. He translated the poems of Poe, and in his own writing became a leader of the Symbolist school. His works included Hérodiade (1864), L'Après-midi d'un faune (1865), which inspired Debussy's prelude, and the remarkable experimental poem, Un Coup de dés (1914, A Dice Throw). |
