| biography:
| Jazz violinist, born in Paris, France. He and Django Reinhardt were the principal soloists in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France (1934–9), the first European jazz band to exert an influence in the USA. Grappelli's suave, piercing violin lines made a perfect foil for Reinhardt's busy guitar. Their partnership ended when Grappelli escaped to England during the Occupation. He returned to Paris in 1948, and continued to make many international appearances. |
