| biography:
| Civil engineer and educator, born in St Petersburg, Russia. He worked as a railway engineer, and in 1906 began as a lecturer at Kiev University. He fled the Soviet Union, emigrating to the USA in 1922. He taught structural engineering at Stanford (1936–54) and contributed to theoretical and applied mechanics. |
