| Icelandic statesman and prime minister (1983–7, 1988–91). He trained as an electrical engineer in the USA, returning to pursue an industrial career. He was director of Iceland's National Research Council (1957–78), and became chairman of the Progressive Party (PP) in 1979. He became a minister in 1978, then prime minister, heading a PP-Independence Party coalition, after which he accepted the foreign affairs portfolio in the government of Thorsteinn Pálsson. He became prime minister again in 1988, but was defeated in the 1991 elections. |
