| Italian politician and economist, born in Casalbuttano, Lombardy, N Italy. He was a deputy of the ‘historic right’ from 1860, and a senator from 1870. He was public works minister under Cavour, La Marmora, and Ricasoli, and worked to improve the country's road and rail network. When the left came to power, he was put in charge of the Land Report (1877–84) which took his name. |
