| Actress, born in New York City, USA. A working girl from the age of 13, she became a dancer, appearing in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1923, and made her stage debut in 1926 and her film debut in 1927. Established as a major star in the 1930s, she is best remembered for her portrayal of pioneering women in such Westerns as Annie Oakley (1935) and Union Pacific (1939). Active in radio and television, she enjoyed a long-running series, The Big Valley (1965–9). She received a special Academy Award in 1982. |
