| Historian, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Harvard (1949 AB) and Columbia (1958 PhD) universities, and taught at the University of Chicago (1955–60) and at Smith College (1960–8; Syndenham Clark Parsons Professor of History Emeritus, 1968). Prominent among the students of Columbia's Richard Hofstadter, and a leading authority on African-American history, his many publications include Slavery: A Problem in American Institutional and Intellectual Life (1959) and The Age of Federalism (1993, with Eric McKitrick). |
