| biography:
| Jazz saxophonist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied for a year at the Juilliard School, New York City, then quit to concentrate on jazz. He worked under Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, and Woody Herman before setting up his own groups, and developing a distinctive ‘cool’ sound. He lived in Scandinavia for several years, then returned to the USA, where in the 1960s he popularized a bossa-nova style. |
