| King of Poland (1704–9, 1733–5), born in Lvov (Lwow), W Ukraine (formerly Poland). After his election in 1704, he was driven out by Peter the Great, under the influence of Charles XII of Sweden. Re-elected in 1733, he lost the War of the Polish Succession, and formally abdicated in 1736, receiving the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar. |
