| biography:
| Last king of Poland (1764–95), born in Wołczyn, SC Poland. He travelled to St Petersburg in 1757, and became a favourite of the future empress, Catherine II. Through her influence he was elected king, but was unable to stop the partitions of Poland (1772, 1793). Despite the rebellion of Kosciusko, the country was partitioned again in 1795, and he abdicated. |
