| biography:
| Actor, theatre director, theoretician, and teacher, born in Moscow, Russia. As a talented amateur actor, he co-founded the Moscow Society of Art and Literature (1888), and in 1898 helped to found the Moscow Arts Theatre. His work with this influential company, and his teaching on acting, proved to be a major contribution to 20th-c theatre. His system remains the basis of much Western actor-training and practice, and his theories and methods are recorded in his many books, among them My Life in Art (1924), An Actor Prepares (1926), Stanislavsky Rehearses Othello (1948), and Building a Character (1950). |
