| biography:
| Abbess and missionary, born in Wessex, England. She joined St Boniface on his mission to Germany, and became Abbess of Heidenheim, where she died. Her relics were transferred (c.870) to Eichstätt. Walpurgisnacht (the eve of St Walpurgis, 30 Apr) arises because popular superstition coincidentally regards the night before the day of the transfer of her remains (1 May) as one when large numbers of witches fly. Feast day 25 February. |
