| Christian martyr, said to have been the son of a Sicilian pagan. He was converted by his nurse Crescentia and her husband Modestus, with whom he suffered martyrdom under Diocletian. He is invoked against sudden death, hydrophobia, epilepsy, and chorea (St Vitus' dance), and is also the patron of comedians and actors. Feast day 15 June. |
