| Woman of Jersualem who, according to tradition, met Jesus Christ during his Passion, and offered him her veil to wipe sweat from his brow, with the result that the divine features were miraculously imprinted upon the cloth. The veil is said to have been preserved in Rome from c.700, and was exhibited in St Peter's in 1933. Possibly Veronica is merely a corruption of vera icon, ‘the true image’. Feast day 12 July. |
