| Legendary saint and martyr. She is especially honoured in Cologne, where she is said to have been slain with some 11 000 virgins by a horde of Huns on her journey home from a pilgrimage to Rome. The legend was very popular in the Middle Ages, and was given strength when a burial ground, believed to be that of the slain virgins, was found near the Church of St Ursula in Cologne in 1106. She became the patron saint of many educational institutes, particularly the teaching order of the Ursulines. Feast day 21 October. |
