| A disciple of Jesus Christ, listed as one of the 12 apostles in the Gospels, but most prominent in John's Gospel, where he is also called Didymus (‘the Twin’), and where he is portrayed as doubting the resurrection until he touches the wounds of the risen Christ (John 20). Early church traditions describe him subsequently as a missionary to the Parthians or a martyr in India. Many later apocryphal works bear his name, such as the Gospel of Thomas, Acts of Thomas, and Apocalypse of Thomas. He is the patron saint of Portugal. Feast day 21 December. |
