| biography:
| Saint, born in Alençon, NE France. An intensely religious child, she entered the Carmelite convent of Lisieux in Normandy at the age of 15, where she remained until her death from tuberculosis nine years later. During her last years she wrote an account of her life which was published posthumously as Histoire d'une âme (1898, Story of a Soul), showing how the most ordinary person can attain sainthood by following her ‘little way’ of simple, childlike Christianity. She was canonized in 1925, and in 1947 associated with Joan of Arc as patron saint of France. She was made a doctor of the Church in 1997. Feast day 1 October. |
