| Patriarch of Alexandria (from 385). He destroyed the pagan temple of Serapis, drove out the Originist monks of Nitria, and defended his actions before a synod at Constantinople called by the Emperor Arcadius and St John Chrysostom. He made peace with the monks, but used his influence with the Empress Eudoxia to have St John banished to Armenia. Feast day 15 October. |
