| Missionary and martyr, born at Saint-Loup-sur-Thouet, Deux Sèvres, SC France. He studied at the Paris Seminary for Foreign Missions and was ordained in 1852. In 1854 he was sent to Tonkin, where he was forced to hide from the state persecution of Christians. In 1860 he was betrayed, arrested, and beheaded the next year. He inspired many with his letters from prison and his death, and in 1988 was canonized by Pope John Paul II. |
