| The first king and spiritual patron of Hungary (997–1038). He formed Pannonia and Dacia into a regular kingdom, organized Christianity, and introduced many social and economic reforms. Married to a German princess, he encouraged German immigration. He received from Pope Sylvester II the title of ‘Apostolic King’ and, according to tradition, St Stephen's Crown, now a Hungarian national treasure. He was canonized in 1083. Feast day 16 August. |
