| Roman martyr, a native of Narbonne, S France. He was a captain of the praetorian guard, and secretly a Christian. When his belief was discovered, Diocletian ordered his death by arrows; but the archers did not quite kill him, and he was nursed back to life. When he upbraided the tyrant for his cruelty, he was beaten to death with rods. Feast day 20 January. |
