| Patriarch of Constantinople (858–67, 877–86), born in Constantinople (Istanbul). On the deposition of Ignatius from the patriarchate, he was hurried through all the stages of holy orders, and installed in his stead. In 862, Pope Nicholas I called a Council at Rome, which declared Photius's election invalid, and reinstated Ignatius. Supported by the emperor, Photius assembled a Council at Constantinople (867), which withdrew from communion with Rome. He was then deposed and reinstated on several occasions, and excluded the Filioque clause from the Creed (879) before being finally exiled to Armenia (886). Feast day 6 February (E). |
