| Mystic, born in Florence, NC Italy, the founder of the Oratory. He went to Rome at the age of 18, and for many years spent most of his time in works of charity and instruction, and in solitary prayer. In 1551 he became a priest, and gathered around him a following of disciples which became the Congregation of the Oratory (1564), and later received the approbation of the pope. The community was finally established at Vallicella, where he built a new church (Chiesa Nuova) on the site of Santa Maria. He was canonized in 1622; feast day 26 May. |
