| biography:
| Franciscan mystic, born in Alcántara, Extremadura, W Spain. He studied philosophy at Salamanca, and his best-known book is Petición especial de amor a Dios (c.1560). His Tratado de la oración y meditación (1533) is now considered to be a précis of Luis de Granada's book of a similar title. As a severe ascetic, he intended to restore the ancient Rule of St Francis to its strictest form. He was venerated during his lifetime by Santa Teresa, Fray Luis de Granada, and Juan de Ávila, beatified in 1662, and canonized in 1669. |
