| Founder of communal monasticism, from Egypt. He superseded the system of solitary reclusive life by founding (AD c.318), the first monastery on the island of Tabenna on the Nile, with its properly regulated communal life and rule. He founded 10 other monasteries, including two convents for women. Feast day 9 May. |
