| biography:
| Christian leader, born in Rome, Italy. He may have been abbot of St Andrew's monastery in Rome, before beginning missionary work under Pope Gregory I, who sent him in 601 to England to assist Augustine, the Archbishop of Canterbury. His mission was to convert Saxon places of pagan worship into Christian churches. He was consecrated as the first Bishop of London (c.604) and became the third Archbishop of Canterbury (619–624). Feast day 24 April. |
