| biography:
| Franciscan priest, born near Łódź, C Poland. He joined the Franciscans in 1907, and studied at the Gregorian University in Rome. In 1917 he founded a devotional association, the Militia of Mary Immaculate, was ordained in 1918, and became director of a religious centre and publishing company. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1939, and again in 1941, and imprisoned in Auschwitz, where he gave his life in exchange for one of the condemned prisoners, Franciszek Gajowniczek. He was canonized in 1982. Feast day 14 August. |
