| Disciple of Jesus. Very little is known about her; Magdalene possibly means ‘of Magdala’, in Galilee. Luke (8.2) reports that Jesus exorcised seven evil spirits from her; thereafter she appears only in the narratives of Jesus's passion and resurrection where, seemingly with other women, she appears at the Cross and later at the empty tomb. John (20) relates a private encounter with the resurrected Jesus. Her identification with Mary, the sister of Martha (John 11–12), is very tenuous. Feast day 22 July. |
