| biography:
| Monk and reformer, born in Armagh, Co Armagh, SE Northern Ireland, UK. He became Abbot of Bangor (1121), Bishop of Connor (1125) and Archbishop of Armagh (1134). He substituted Roman for Celtic liturgy, and renewed the use of the sacraments. In 1139 he journeyed to Rome, visiting St Bernard at Clairvaux, and introduced the Cistercian Order into Ireland on his return in 1142. In 1190 he became the first Irishman to be canonized. Feast day 3 November. |
