| Pope (795–816), born in Rome, Italy. In 799, opposition to his election forced him to flee from Rome to the protection of Charlemagne. After returning safely, he crowned Charlemagne Emperor of the West (800), thus initiating the Holy Roman Empire. He was canonized in 1673. Feast day 12 June. |
