| biography:
| Celtic clergyman. According to legend he was the grandson of a British prince, raised by St Serf in a monastery at Culross, and given by him the name Mungo. He founded a monastery at Cathures (now Glasgow), and in 543 was consecrated Bishop of Cumbria. In 553 he was driven to seek refuge in Wales, where he visited St David, and where he founded another monastery and a bishopric, which still bears the name of his disciple, St Asaph. He was recalled to Scotland by a new king, Rederech Hael, and c.584 was visited by Columba. He was buried in Glasgow Cathedral, which is named after him as St Mungo's. Feast day 13 January. |
