| Monk, born in Harpham, East Riding, NE England, UK. After studying at Canterbury, he became a monk at St Hilda's monastery for nuns and monks at Whitby, North Yorkshire. He became Bishop of Hexham (687–705) and Bishop of York (705–17), before retiring to the monastery of Beverley, which he had founded. During his ministry he took an especial interest in the poor and disabled. Feast day 7 May. |
