| Playwright and critic, born in Belfast, NE Northern Ireland, UK. He was manager of the Abbey Theatre, Dublin (1915–16), where his first plays were produced. After World War 1, in which he lost a leg, he won a high reputation as a drama critic, working on The Observer and The Morning Post, and for the BBC (1932). His plays include Anthony and Anna (1926), The First Mrs Fraser (1929), and Robert's Wife (1937), and he also wrote seven novels and several biographies. |
