| Monk and theologian, born in Dobruja, SE Romania. He spent some years as an ascetic in the Egyptian deserts, before being ordained in 403. He instituted several monasteries in the S of France, including the Abbey of St Victor at Massilia (Marseille), which served as a model for many in Gaul and Spain. He was the author of Collationes (on the Desert Fathers) and a book on monasticism. Feast day 23 July. |
