| biography:
| Christian ascetic and scholar, born in Stridon, W Croatia. After living for a while as a hermit, he was ordained in 379, and became secretary to Pope Damasus (reigned 366–84). He moved to Bethlehem in 386, where he wrote many letters and treatises, and commentaries on the Bible. He is chiefly known for making the first translation of the Bible from Hebrew into Latin (the Vulgate). Feast day 30 September. |
