James, St (‘brother’ of Jesus),
|
| |
also known as St James the Just
|
| biography:
| Listed with Joseph, Simon, and Judas (Matt 13.55) as a ‘brother’ of Jesus of Nazareth, and identified as the foremost leader of the Christian community in Jerusalem (Gal 1.19, 2.9; Acts 15.13). He is not included in lists of the disciples of Jesus, and should not be confused with James, the son of Alphaeus, or James, the son of Zebedee, but he did apparently witness the resurrected Christ (1 Cor 15.7). He showed Jewish sympathies over the question of whether Christians must adhere to the Jewish law. According to Josephus, he was martyred by stoning (c.62). Feast day 1 May. |
