| One of the apostolic Fathers of the Church, reputedly a disciple of St John, the second Bishop of Antioch. According to Eusebius, he died a martyr in Rome. The Ignatian Epistles, whose authenticity was long controversial, were written on his way to Rome after being arrested. They provide valuable information on the nature of the early Church. Feast day 17 October. |
