| biography:
| Clergyman, born in Avalon, EC France. Priest at the Grande Chartreuse (1160–70), he was called to England by Henry II to found a Carthusian monastery in Witham, Somerset (1178). He became Bishop of Lincoln (1186), where he fought against the savage forestry laws in the royal forests, and defended the Jews against rioting mobs. He refused to pay taxes to Richard I to finance wars (a significant event in constitutional history), and began the rebuilding of Lincoln cathedral. He was canonized in 1220; feast day 17 November. |
