| Abbess, born in Northumberland, NE England, UK. She was baptized by Paulinus in 627, and in 649 became Abbess of Hartlepool. In 657 she founded the monastery at Streaneshalch or Whitby, a house for both nuns and monks. This became a great religious centre for the N of England, and housed the Synod of Whitby in 664. Feast day 17 November. |
