| biography:
| Clergyman, one of the Doctors of the Church, born of pagan parents in Limonum (Poitiers), W France. He did not become a Christian until he was advanced in life. About 350 he was elected Bishop of Poitiers, and immediately rose to the first place as an opponent of Arianism. His principal work is that on the Trinity, but his three addresses to Emperor Constantius II are remarkable for the boldness of their language. His feast day marks the beginning of a term at Oxford and Durham universities, and English law sittings, to which his name is consequently applied. Feast day 13 January. |
