| Mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine (the Great), born in Bithynia, Asia Minor. The wife of Emperor Constantius Chlorus, she early became a Christian, and when Constantine became emperor he made her empress dowager. In 326, according to tradition, she visited Jerusalem, and founded the basilicas on the Mt of Olives and at Bethlehem. Feast day 18 August (W), 21 May (E). |
