| Abbot, born in Sherborne, Dorset, S England, UK. Educated at Sherborne Abbey, he joined the Cluniac abbey at Molesme, but was dissatisfied with the lax way of life, and left (1098) with several others to found the monastery of Cîteaux, S of Dijon. He was abbot from 1109, and under him several other abbeys were founded to follow the strict rule he imposed, forming the Cistercian Order. Feast day 16 July. |
