| Patron saint of France, born in Sabaria, Pannonia. He studied at Pavia, travelled to Gaul, and founded the first monastery near Poitiers in c.360. He became famous for his sanctity and as a worker of miracles. He was drawn by force from his retreat in 371–2, and made Bishop of Tours, but chose to live in a new monastery which he founded at Marmoutier, near Tours. Feast day 11 (W) or 12 November (E). |
