| biography:
| One of the greatest of the Greek fathers, born in Caesarea, Cappadocia, the brother of Gregory of Nyssa. He studied at Byzantium and Athens, lived for a time with hermits in the desert, and in 370 succeeded Eusebius of Caesarea as bishop of his native city. A fierce opponent of Arianism, he improved monastic standards and wrote many seminal works. Feast day 1 Jan (E), 2 Jan (W). |
