| Historian and monk, born in the Strathclyde area of Scotland, UK. He lived mostly in Wales, where he became a monk after the death of his wife. He went to Brittany c.550 and is said to have founded the monastery of Ruys, near Vannes. A popular Breton saint, he is the writer of De excidio et conquestu Britanniae (The Overthrow and Conquest of Britain), probably written between 516 and 547, the only extant history of the Celts, and the only contemporary British version of events from the invasion of the Romans to his own time. The first version in English was published by Thomas Habington (1560–1647) in 1638 and 1641. Feast day 29 January. |
