| Priest, the founder of the Gilbertine Order, born in Sempringham, Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. In 1148 he founded an order of monks and nuns, and lay sisters and brothers. The only mediaeval religious order founded in England, it did not spread beyond England and Scotland, and was dissolved at the Reformation. He was canonized in 1202; feast day 4 February. |
