| Franciscan monk, the founder of the Minim friars, born in Paola, S Italy. After spending a year with the Franciscan community in San Marco, he decided in 1431 on a life of austerity, and became a hermit, living in a cave. His reputation spread through Italy and France, and he was joined by others.
