| Hungarian princess, born in Pressburg, Hungary (now Bratislava, Slovak Republic), the daughter of Andreas II. At the age of four she was betrothed to Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, whom she married in 1221. Louis died on his way to the Sixth Crusade in 1227, whereupon Elizabeth was deprived of her regency by her husband's brother. She renounced wealth, and devoted the rest of her life to the service of the poor, building a hospice at Marburg. She was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1235; feast day 17 November. |
