| King of Northumbria from 616, brought up in North Wales. Under him, Northumbria became united. He pushed his power W as far as Anglesey and Man, obtained the overlordship of East Anglia, and (by a victory over the West Saxons) that of all England, save Kent. He was converted to Christianity, and baptized with his nobles in 627. He fell in battle with the Mercians and Welsh at Hatfield Chase, and was afterwards canonized; feast day 12 October. |
